To address the long-standing chip control challenges associated with certain special aluminum alloy billets, Maxton developed a pioneering billet scalping line designed for the efficient removal of surface material while maintaining stable and reliable chip management throughout the process.
Unlike conventional billet conditioning methods, the project utilizes a dedicated scalping process to generate controlled chip formation during machining. This innovative approach effectively solves the problem of continuous and difficult-to-break chips often encountered when processing specific aluminum alloy grades, improving operational safety, material handling efficiency, and overall production reliability. The installation represents an industry-first application of billet scalping technology for this specialized aluminum billet processing requirement.
The line is designed to process exceptionally large aluminum billets with diameters of up to Ø1000 mm, significantly exceeding the capacity of conventional billet conditioning systems. To accommodate these heavy and oversized billets, the installation integrates heavy-duty billet handling equipment, precision centering mechanisms, high-rigidity rotational supports, and a robust scalping unit within a fully automated production line.
By removing surface layers and machining-related defects prior to downstream processing, the system ensures improved billet surface quality and greater product consistency. The integrated automatic chip collection and handling system further enhances production efficiency while reducing manual intervention and housekeeping requirements.
This project demonstrates Maxton's capability to deliver customized conditioning solutions for challenging aluminum alloys and large-diameter billet applications, providing a practical and reliable answer to processing requirements that could not be effectively addressed using conventional methods.
